Newburgh Club to Honor its Members

-By Barbara Bedell
Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Newburgh will benefit from the first “Stand By Me Gala,” a fundraising event April 18 at the Newburgh Armory.

Although details are still in the works, it is an event, sponsored in part by Orange County Trust, that will celebrate the nonprofit’s female members while honoring the “positive males who have pledged to stand by them through their actions, encouragement and continued support.”Part of the club’s mission is to provide the members with ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals, said program director DareShanie D’Arpino. “We wish to be inclusive of all types of role models,” she said. “Our intention is to recognize the grandfathers, uncles, older brothers, and teachers who contribute to the well-being of our female members each and every day. We want to make sure their efforts and dedication is acknowledged.”

The community is invited to be part of the event by providing scholarships that begin at $20, for girls who cannot afford to attend the gala. For information, contact Jasmine Nixon, director of special projects, at 561-4936, ext. 205, or visit bgcnny.org. The club is located at 285 Liberty St. in Newburgh.

Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids

[Newburgh, NY, January 2015] — The Boys & Girls Club of Newburgh is pleased to announce that we have been selected for a third year as an official partner of Payless Gives™ Shoes 4 Kids, an annual giving program from Payless ShoeSource. We are a mong 800 charitable agencies representing all 50 states in the United States, as well as Canada, Puerto Rico and 11 Latin American countries. The Boys & Girls Club of Newburgh distributed merchandise certificates to The Afterschool Project (TAP) students this past month

TAP is a comprehensive education initiative designed to provide students in grades K-12 with the academic
, social and vocational skills they need to successfully graduate college and join the profession of their choice. TAP provides intensive instruction in all academic disciplines, including science and technology, math, and English language arts. Arts and culture, athletics and recreation round out the activities. The program operates Monday to Friday from 2pm-6pm, the hours when young people, if unsupervised, are most likely to engage in harmful, negative activities.
This is the sixth year of the Payless Gives™ Shoes 4 Kids program. Although studies show that properly fitting shoes are important for children’s health and development, a striking number of children don’t own a pair of shoes that fit. We are working to remedy that here in New York.
By helping families who struggle to provide their children with basic e
ssentials on a daily basis, the Boys & Girls Club of Newburgh, in partnering with the Payless Gives™ Shoes 4 Kids program, hopes to relieve some of the stress parents feel during the school year and bring joy to as many children as possible.
